Robert Badinter was a french lawyer who enacted the abolition of the capital punishment in France. He was jew and lost parents in the shoah and this book is based on two long late interviews of him.

C’est douloureux, les souvenirs. Joyeux aussi parfois, mais douloureux souvent.

Talking about “normal” people helping other to hide during the occupation

Et ceux là, à ces bonnes gens, il faut rendre un hommage modeste et constant, à la mesure de ce qu’étaient leur dévouement et leur courage. Modestes mais constants.

Talking about his mother, with political ideas from right, when he became minister in a government from left:
