#3 David Hawkins-Weeks

Clean. Imagination. That’s what comes to my mind when I look at the pictures of David Hawkins-Weeks. David, a self-taught and amateur photograph, succeeds in making me think outside the box with his pictures: the colors are pure, the shots are precise and the subjects are clean. “I have an interest in subjects of the everyday and ordinary that we often walk right by without noticing.” says David. I agree totally with his statement and I like the fantasi world his abstract pictures take me into.

 

David, what inspires you?

– Geometry of lines and angles, repeated patterns and shapes, bold colours or high contrast. I particularly like looking right in at the detail, hence the macro work and looking at things from an unusual angle.

 

What make a good photo, in your eyes?

– Somewhat subjective, according to the viewer. For me, it has to make an immediate impact and a connection on a level rather than the blatant obvious, i.e., an emotional or feeling connection.

 

David, can you recommend something to make a good photo?

Don’t ignore what’s around you – look at everyday objects and scenes that you see all of the time from a different angle. Challenge yourself to take photos of subjects that might not at first appear interesting… there’s always a photo there somewhere of everything!

And week 4

What was the menu of this week number four of the Nike coach program for half marathon, level beginner? I tell you: enough to get bored! I am currently suffering of lack of company during my runs, this is awefull. Plus that the weather is not helping for the variation of the runs: snow over ice outside: no no no, I don’t want to break a leg, this is not on the program!

The week was like that:

  • day 1: run 4,85 km. As usual, mondays are for horse back riding. And once again, Owen was really fun!
  • day 2: run 6,04 km. Oh what for a pain when the alarm clock rang! I can come late to my work but it is much more difficult to leave early, so I decided to go to the gym and run inside before to go to work, in order to get it done. Easier said than done, I tell you! On my way to the gym, in the dark morning of Sweden, I just felt from my whole length because of a hidden icy part under the snow, it woke me up! Then, it was a pain in the a** to achieve this 6,04 km. I actuall ran 6,1 in order not to miss like 3 meters like the other time. This was irritating. But I ran these km very slowly, my body was not really ready to perform at 6h45 in the morning.
  • Day 3: run 4,83 km. It took me maybe the whole day, if I’m not lying, to persuade myself to go to the gym after the work. It was snowing, like stormy snowing and I knew I was closed -time speaking- to the rush of people training after work. Well, I went there and had luck to have a free running machine and ran my 4,83 km in 27,01 min. Not as fast as the previous time, but I weight too much. This is very obvious to me, 3-4 kg to much that have to dissapear! CLEAR?
  • Day 4: cross train. Cross train was replaced by a visit to the hair dresser and it took the whole evening. No comment.
  • Day 5: run 4,83 km. When I came back from work on day 5, I was not feeling well. I also had a bag to pack for a weel travel so, no running.
  • Day 6: run 12,87 km. some thousands of kilometers in the plane, does it count? no, ok…
  • Day 7: rest. No rest for me. I took a run in my parents hoods and it lasted for 5 km and something. I almost got eaten by a dog and had to see some snow . I planned to put some picture of this but my computer refuses for the moment. Sorry!

At this point of the program (1/3 done), it feels really hard to follow it. I ran 16,18 km, which was far less than the 33,39km planned by the coach. I am bored while running, mostly because I have to make in indoor and I feel really heavy even if I am weighting around 63,5kr, meaning an half kilo less that the past week. I feel tired in my body because of my work (I have been up pretty early every morning) and the evenings are still dark, I mean black. so you see!

I spend a week in France for the 5th week of the nike coach program. The temperatures don’t seem to be much higher, but at least, I am counting with a little more variation in the landscape to give me a little more happiness while running. I will try to run a bit longer than the program says and to sleep more as well.

Victoria Bergman – Erik Axl Sund

Since I spent some hours in the planes and waiting at the airport on saturday, I managed to rea a book. This was the first of the trilogy of Erik Axl Sund (duo of swedish writters) about Victoria Bergman.

Well, what to say… The book is pretty easy to read, with kind of a twist around Victoria but I am right now growing sick of reading about people with problem in their heads. The vocabulary is not very rich either, so it makes the whole a little poor and I won’t read the other parts of the trilogy.

When life is not exactly what you planned it to be

Today, it is friday. It is not only the day before a week end, it is even the day before one week of vacations in France. Oh nice you may think, but I’d rather be working. My mother is having some health issues that put her at the hospital so this is not a uppcheering week that is coming.

Anyway, the situation is as it is and I’d better do the best out of it. I will pack my running shoes and try to enjoy the landscapes there. I will also take my camera and try to shoot a little. And I will take my book for the lecture I am following and trying to read 2 of them. Big ambitions for someone who doesn’t know at all how the week will go.

I am not really sure to be ableto post things on here either, it’s depending of my internet connexion but if it doesn’t work, I’ll keep you updated.

#2 Nicolò Ripley

Nature. Humour. Details. That’s what I see in the pictures of Nicolò Ripley.

Nicolò makes photo to distract himself from everyday problem. “This is a way for him to escape reality for a better one” he says and I can just confirm that: his shots from small things in his environment make me dream.

Nicoló, what inspires you?

– I like the nature. Lately I even tried to walk in the woods because I realized that even a simple step was able to change something.

 

What makes a good photo, in your eyes?

– I try to see beyond the photo. I like to get into the picture.

 

Nicoló, can you recommend something to make a good photo?

–  A good photo is made by the emotions from those who take them.

Week 3…

Oh. I just say Oh. This week number three has been filled in with … job. And long days around travelling for it, which made of me a little piece of tired human being.

  • Day 1: 4,83 km. Oh the noes! Monday are made for the riding and riding it was. The big Owen made me happy, and the hour on his back gave me some pain in the legs the day after. But it doesn’t help for the half marathon though…
  • Day 2: 8,05 km. With 2 little nights before this day number 2, a long day at work with 4 hours of transport and meetings, coming back home at almost 19 and very icy roads and everything, ok you get it, my motivation was not very high to move myself. I took my little self to the gym and oh, noes, so much people… again… But I found a place to run and it was 5 km with, after a warming up of  2 km, intervaller of 200 m at the speed of 12,5-13 km/h and 30-40 seconds rest in between. Half half happy with this pass.
  • Day 3: Cross-train. I sat in a train, like 4 hours, does it count? For real, this long day at work made it impossible for me to make anything else than work, eat and sleep this day.
  • Day 4: rest. Check!
  • Day 5: 4,83 km. Nothing. This was a day again with travel for my work and a lots of things to do as well. I was totally tired and for my defense: it is totally impossible for me to run on ice and I am growing tired of running at the gym. I want the winter to decide itself: snow and cold or spring and clean!
  • Day 6: 9,66 km. Nothing but a walk with a friend in the snow. Maybe a bad excuse but I was too tired to jump in my running clothes.
  • Day 7: rest. Oh no! I ran 11 km in 1h09 this day.

It is a bit of jongling with work and training I notice. I ran 16 km this week instead of the 26 planned by Nike coach and ok, I could have ran yesterday but oh well, you get me… My weigth, at the end of the week is still 64 kg.

Younger

My sister visited my parents this week-end and she found an 10 years old picture of M and me. We were looking young, had longer hair and had no idea where we would be 10 years later. At this time, I was living in Germany, M was back in Sweden and we had no idea that we would own a flat together now, 10 years after the picture was taken.

Sometimes I wonder where I will be in 10 years. When I look back, I am pretty happy of the ways I took, even if there was no evidence from the beginning. Who has actually? Who has a life all pre-drawn, with a path to walk? Princes and princesses maybe? I don’t envy them, because what I’ve got now, is what I worked for, and got help to achieve. What I will have in 10 years depends on me a lot: what will I make from my time?

On tuesday, there is an introduction-chat for a lecture I am intending the 12 coming weeks. This is about the philosophy of photografy. We have some litterature to read and we will have to write essay about some subjects connected to photografy and philosofy. This is to me, who studied science, a new path to go and maybe a way to make better even better interview and to developp my way of thinking around photos. I am very excited, even if it’s a lot about reading, and I wonder how I will make it work with my job and other ambitions, but I’ll give it a big try!
